meaningless...meaningless...
The semester is nearly finished, and I am weary of studying...as the Teacher says...Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body. ~ Ecclesiastes 12:11Inspired by a good friend's thoughts on Ecclesiastes, I decided to read the book myself this weekend, and found myself a bit despairing and frustrated (especially hearing how everything is meaningless, meaningless, over and over). There's a time for everything, yet it's all still meaningless. Enjoy your youth, but it is meaningless. Eat, drink and find pleasure in your work, but even that is meaningless.
I was like, "okay, so how am I to be happy and live well when these heavy thoughts of meaninglessness weigh me down?"
But then I connected some dots (and also had a good discussion with my housemates and was encouraged by Andy's Easter blog)...and recalled some Truths of the early church....
So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and steady, always enthusiastic about the Lord's work, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless. ~ 1 Corinthians 15:58 (NLT)
For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. ~ Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
And it makes sense...it's not in anything we are or do or think or enjoy that provides meaning. If we're trusting in our own selves for meaning, that is where everything is meaningless. But meaning comes through recognizing God's awesomeness and obeying Him (fear God and keep His commands). It is in Christ that our lives and activities and relationships are full of meaning and purpose.
What great encouragement to start the week, this final week of classes!
"Meaningful, meaningful - Christ makes all things meaningful!!!"
