thoughts on Jesus and gifts
1. I was thinking how it would have been nice if the Bible had a bit more about Jesus' "pre-ministry" years. We're told: "And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and men" (Luke 2:52).But how'd He do that?
Sure, He was God, but He was also human. So how'd He grow in wisdom, stature and favour? How did He wait, when He knew there was more to His life than carpentry? What were the practical, day-to-day sort of lifestyle choices and things He did? How did He patiently navigate His 30-or-so years pre-public ministry? Because, I sometimes have a hard time being patient, feeling like there's more to my life than sitting behind a desk in West Michigan; and it'd be great to have some Biblical input on how Jesus did it.
Although, in Philippians 2, it says:
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (ESV)That's something to ponder...being obedient to the point of death...having the mind of Christ to think of others and their interests as more significant than myself...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
2. Read a great article on Urbana's website, about gifts in the Body of Christ. Here's a quote from it that I resonated with:
Because of the rampant individualism that characterizes much of culture in the West, we often are so concerned about our own growth and our personal spirituality we forget that we become wholly Christ-like only together, as a body of believers.Read the whole devotional and be encouraged.
3. Steady on!...I think these two thoughts tie together...how self-focused I can get! Doh! Well, thanks for listening to my processings. I hope you're encouraged, and if you have any further thoughts, do share!
